Horse Farm Owners Who Use Roundup Think Twice

To protect our health, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sets maximum legal residue levels for every pesticide, for dozens of crops. But a new study in the respected journal Toxicology has shown that, at low levels that are currently legal on our food, Roundup weed killer could cause DNA damage, endocrine disruption and cell death. The study, conducted by French researchers, shows glyphosate-based herbicides are toxic to human reproductive cells. Difficulty Time Required Very Long (1+ months) Prerequisites None Material Availability Readily available Cost Average ($50 – $100) Safety Wear disposable gloves when handling the weed killer and work in a well-ventilated area. Adult supervision is recommended. Abstract
According to information released yesterday, the world’s most popular herbicide – Roundup – may be linked to Parkinson’s, infertility and cancers, according to a new peer-reviewed report just published in the scientific journal “ Entropy” Evidence indicates that residues of ” glyphosate ,” the chief ingredient in Roundup weed killer, which is sprayed over millions of acres of crops, has been found in food. Ortho makes a line of weed killers and pest control products. Many of these products are available in liquid or powder. Their bug killer products helps to control fire ants, mice and other lawn bugs.
Salt – If you sprinkle a small amount of cooking salt at the base of the weed it will kill it in quite a short time. It will also render the soil at the site of the dead plant unsuitable for growing for several months so don’t expect the grass to immediately cover the place where you’ve eradicated a Dandelion in your lawn. You can also sprinkle salt on paths or gravel beds to keep the weeds at bay. Glyphosate itself also kills a great many soil microbes—so the ones that survive create a highly unbalanced soil ecology. Pathogens that affect both plants and animals thrive in these disturbed conditions.
Most people will be worried to discover they may have weed killer in their bodies. We tested people living in cities in 18 countries and found traces in every country. These results suggest we are being exposed to glyphosate in our everyday lives, yet we don’t know where it is coming from, how widespread it is in the environment, or what it is doing to our health. The peer-reviewed report, published last week in the scientific journal Entropy, said evidence indicates that residues of “glyphosate,” the chief ingredient in Roundup weed killer, which is sprayed over millions of acres of crops, has been found in food.
Glyphosate is generally less persistent in water than in soil, with 12 to 60 day persistence observed in Canadian pond water, yet persistence of over a year have been observed in the sediments of ponds in Michigan and Oregon. 23 However, low glyphosate concentrations can be found in many creeks and rivers in the US and in Europe. 84 Tumors seemed to be late-developing, large mammary tumors, and the affected rats suffered from severe liver and kidney damage. The tumors did not metastasize or spread to other body parts, but were so large they blocked organ function in the rats.
Both 2,4-D and dicamba, another older herbicide, are common ingredients in weedkillers at lawn-and-garden stores, which homeowners are careful to keep away from flowers and vegetables. Chemical companies say both are safe in larger amounts if farmers follow usage instructions cleared years ago by the EPA. Although not organic, glyphosate is a more suitable choice for non-selective weed control. Contrary to the opinion of the uninformed, it is also safe to handle and won’t harm the environment – when used according to the label directions Dry concentrate non-selective herbicide which combines the systemic action of Glyphosate (active ingredient in Roundup, Rodeo, Gallup and others) with quick knockdown power of Diquat.
For timely updates, join the Non-GMO Project on Facebook , or follow them on Twitter Please, do your homework. Together, we have the power to stop the chemical technology industry from destroying our food supply, the future of our children, and the earth as a whole. All we need is about five percent of American shoppers to simply stop buying genetically engineered foods, and the food industry would have to reconsider their source of ingredients—regardless of whether the products bear an actual GMO label or not. Seek immediate medical help. Do NOT make a person throw up unless told to do so by poison control or a health care professional.
The researchers pointedout that, “the 2007 weekly air concentration pattern for glyphosate wassimilar to those of other commonly detected herbicides in both 1995 and 2007 inthat the highest concentrations occurred in April and May. However, there weredetectable concentrations of glyphosate over the entire growing season, whichis consistent with how glyphosate is used on GM crops, including forpost-emergent weed control throughout the growing season.” Thelonger period of exposure adds to growing concern that this ubiquitous toxicantrepresents an unavoidable body burden and that even small daily environmentalexposures may be causing significant harm through their cumulative and synergisticeffects with other toxicants.
In March 2010, a regional court in Argentina’s Santa Fe province banned the spraying of glyphosate and other herbicides near populated areas. A month later, the provincial government of Chaco province issued a report on health statistics from La Leonesa. The report, which was carried in the leftist Argentinian newspaper Página 12 , showed that from 2000 to 2009, following the expansion of genetically-modified soy and rice crops in the region, the childhood cancer rate tripled in La Leonesa and the rate of birth defects increased nearly fourfold over the entire province.
